Classic Sega games now have official mod support on Steam

You know what that means: time to stick Knuckles in everything.

Classic games from Sega's Genesis/Megadrive libraries now have official mod support on the PC game service Steam. This means you can use Valve's Steam Workshop to create and share mods for titles like Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star II and Ecco the Dolphin.

While Sega has not provided any official mod tools to coincide with the update, players are free to use their own and have already gotten started releasing everything from funny rom hacks to overhauls and system tweaks, like Ecco the Dolphin Rev. 01, which introduces checkpoints and other fixes from the Japanese version of the game.

Check out the Steam Workshop hub to view all currently available mods. Above, you can see a still from one which replaces Sonic's sprite from the original Sonic the Hedgehog with that of Sally Acorn, monarch and freedom fighter from Archie's Sonic comics universe. Finally, Sally is canon. There's also a mod called Egg Factory and I'm not... sure I want to know what that one's about.

But we know what's definitely going to come of this update:
