Stardew Valley has sold over a million copies in two months

That's a lot of barn-raisin'.

Stardew Valley -- the cute-as-a-button farming and crafting game which pays homage to the classic Harvest Moon series -- is on track to be one of the most successful games on Steam in the first half of 2016.

Speaking with Polygon, a representative from development studio Chucklefish Games pegged its total sales at 1,007,000 copies to date. Steamspy's trackers also indicate it has recently passed the 1 million mark.

"It's been really exciting for us to help bring this game to people's attention," said the representative, "and the success really couldn't have come to a more deserving person!"

Stardew Valley is almost entirely the product of exactly one programmer, Eric Barone. Working an average of 10 hours a day over the course of four years, Barone is responsible for every sprite, background and principal line of code you see in the game, and he's continued to support players through regular updates and bug fixes in the two months since launch.

Of course, players have also leaped in to develop a wide range of mods for the game, which is a big part of the appeal. There's even an ongoing project to replace Stardew Valley's native critters with Pokemon! So it's gratifying to see that a game that is so much the product of a single person has resonated with so many players, and it's a sign we can expect more extensive updates (and ports to other platforms) in the future.
