Jump Force brings Shonen Jump's biggest heroes to life

Goku is real and he is my friend.

In Japan, many serialized manga are released in anthology magazines. Of these, the best known, both in Japan and broad, is undoubtedly Weekly Shonen Jump, which served as the original publication for nearly every famous anime/manga series you know (that is, the ones geared toward boys): Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Death Note, and My Hero Academia, just to name a few.

Weekly Shonen Jump is so popular, it now releases its issues in English just days after they launch in Japan. Together with same-day streaming services like Crunchyroll, anime fandom abroad is now more closely linked with Japan than it has ever been.

It's for that reason that Bandai Namco unveiled Jump Force at E3 this week. Billed as a celebration of Shonen Jump's 50th anniversary, Jump Force brings together some of the magazine's biggest names -- Son Goku from Dragonball, Luffy from One Piece, and Boruto's Dad from Boruto -- in a gorgeous-looking 3D brawler. Settings are based on a combination of fictional locales and real locations, including New York City and the Alps, where "Real World meets Jump World."

Goku, Naruto, and Luffy will square off against their biggest antagonists and rivals: Frieza, Sasuke, and Zoro respectively. Light Yagami and Ryuk from Death Note are indicated to appear as well, though it's not yet known whether they're playable.

(Insert your obligatory "biggest crossover in history" joke here. Go on. Get it out of your system.)

Bandai Namco also promises some sort of "platform enhancements" on consoles, although what this actually means (besides 4K on Xbox One) is a little unclear.

Jump Force arrives on PlayStation4 and Xbox One in 2019, so we can expect to hear some more details (and more character unveilings) between now and then.

(What I want to know is, are we going to get My Hero Academia characters? It doesn't seem a stretch considering MHA is also getting a fighting game. And what about Hunter x Hunter? Black Clover? HAIKYUU??)
