Watch: Ridley joins the Smash Bros Ultimate roster

They said it couldn't be done.

If you're a Metroid fan, you probably have some feelings on giant bad guy pterodactyl Ridley. If you're a Metroid fan and a Smash Bros fan, you might've been hoping for some time now that the big cyborg dino might join the exclusive Smash character roster, which includes legendary Nintendo characters like the Wii Fit Trainer and five million Fire Emblems.

Well, wait no longer! Ridley's time in the sun is here. During this morning's E3 Nintendo Direct stream, we finally got a full unveiling of the latest Smash Bros, dubbed Super Smash Bros Ultimate. In addition to literally every character that has ever appeared in a Smash game, the big rude dino is making his big debut. Check out the announcement trailer below:

Smash Bros series director Masahiro Sakurai said in a 2008 interview that it "would probably be impossible" to include Ridley, and that even if he were added to the roster, he would be too "slow." Over the years, fans have interpreted this to mean Ridley's character model would be "too big" to make for a balanced opponent, as though scale weren't a highly fluid thing in Nintendo properties to begin with.

(If I were the betting kind, I would wager that Sakurai meant Ridley would be a huge challenge to animate on Wii hardware, so it makes sense that it took until the arrival of a relatively high-powered console for the big guy to make his appearance. But we'll never know for sure.)

Ridley and the rest of Super Smash Bros Ultimate gang arrive on Nintendo Switch this December 7th.
